April 29th 2012, Streatham-Croydon RFC Minis and Juniors end of season celebrations the first time I stepped onto the Frant Road turf and a day I still look back to five years on.
Invited down a seventeen year old who had only taken rugby up three years prior and following a chance meeting whilst attending a free coaching course run at the club. Little did I know I would still be coming back every Sunday five years later a level two coach, having captained a university side and played at multiple different levels of the game,
Present on that day were two relatively unknown Harlequins youngsters, one who is now a Lions prop (Kyle Sinckler) and the other who has risen to becoming a first team second-row (Sam Twomey). Seeing the successes of these two, always makes me reflect on our successes as our club within the same time period. A new stand, the launch of the Salamanders women’s team, the recruitment of many new youngsters and their transition into the county and academy system, promotions and relegation. Everywhere you look around the club there has been transition and progression but allied with support and community which sets the club apart.
Looking forward, we have the development of our young players into the senior sides to look forward to, a group I have been with since I joined the club and hopefully they will continue to become the next group of great Streatham-Croydon players and build on the core community values we have at our club.
I guess all thats left to say is that whatever your age, experience or reason come and experience Streatham-Croydon RFC and who knows perhaps you may still be around in five years time.
